Whether you're Freelancing Part-Time, Full-Time, Sometimes, or at Tea Time, Freelancers need to stay motivated!
Not only do you have to do the tasks at hand for your business, but you must also do the other stuff- invoices, budgets, timekeeping, scheduling, paperwork, cold calling, the to-do lists go on and on.
Without a boss to tell you what to do, you have the freedom to work when and how you want. It's great, but it can have it's cons. Procrastination is a big one, as well as a lack of motivation. What's a Freelancer to do?
Here's 5 tips I've learned over the years and I want to share them with you! I hope that they help! :)
1. Find a workspace
Find a workspace that is comfortable where you will work. It can be a room in an office, a kitchen table, a corner of your living room, or at the coffee shop. Wherever you're working, it must be your designated "work area" so when you're there, you know it's time to work. It's also good to have a few workspaces, to keep your mind fresh and for a change of scenery. Don't work where you sleep, or where you relax- you don't want to associate work when you should be relaxing, and vice versa. I took a room in my house and made it my own- I put up motivational posters, animation posters, as well as toys & treasures that inspire me. I also work at my local coffee shop sometimes, but my studio is my "work" space. It's where my creativity is sparked and work just flows!
2. Set your own work schedule, and stick to it!
The perks of Freelancing is you pick your own schedule! Maybe you love waking up early and getting work done, or maybe you're more of an evening to late night worker. Whatever it may be, you get to choose!
You should also let others know that's when you're working, so you don't get distractions. If you're invited out somewhere, say "I can't, I have to work" because you should be working! Be sure to take frequent breaks and work in chunks. I like to do what's called a "task tackle" where I set aside an hour or two, look at my tasks, and try to see how many I can complete within that time!
3. DON'T do housework!
(unless it's part of your job)
I'm guilty of this one myself. You're at home, working, suddenly you see some laundry that must be done, oh and you should take out the trash, don't forget to put those away... STOP! You're at WORK. Not home! Imagine if you had a regular Full-Time job in an office. You can't do chores there, right? Why should working from home be any different? Save chore time for some other time.
4. Find your own way of organizing
Everyone organizes differently. Some need a big planner, others just need a simple list. Some work only digitally, and others prefer the ol' pen & paper approach. There's no one right way to organized!
5. Remember to reward yourself
Work is work and it can be a lot of fun if you love what you do, but it can also be very hard. We can stress ourselves too much and forget to eat or sleep. You must remember that you're only human and can only do so much in one day. Take time for yourself. Take those breaks, take a lunch, and reward yourself at the end of the day!
