You betcha bottom dollar (There'll be sun out tomorrow... ♫)
There are 7 types of intelligences (there are supposedly a couple more, but we're just going to focus on these 7), & everyone has all of these intelligences. But everyone has different levels of these intelligences. Usually, we end up making a career out of some our strongest intelligences, because it's what we're naturally good at & we love doing it. But remember, we ALL possess all of these intelligences, so we should also try to practice in the areas that are our weakest. Something I was noticing is how some intelligences are linked together within the realms of our personality & work. Let's take a look at these & discuss:
Verbal/Linguistic: Words, spoken or written. People with high verbal-linguistic intelligence display a facility with words and languages. They are typically good at reading, writing, telling stories.
Bodily-kinesthetic: In control of one's body movements & muscle use. Usually can handle objects very skillfully- may be good at dancing, Acting, & sports. Muscular movement, like to do things physically, build things, & have good "muscle memory"
Musical: This area has to do with sensitivity to sounds, rhythms, tones, and music. People with a high musical intelligence normally have good pitch. Sometimes use songs or rhythms to learn. They have sensitivity to rhythm, pitch, meter, tone, melody.
Spatial: This area deals with spatial judgment and the ability to visualize with the mind's eye. People with Spacial intelligence are good with layouts, Designs, & Puzzles. They have Spatial judgment.
Logical-mathematical: This area deals with logic, abstractions, reasoning and numbers. They usually think logically & scientifically, & can find reasoning & patterns.
Intrapersonal: This area deals with self reflection & meditation. This refers to having a deep understanding of the self; what your strengths/ weaknesses are, what makes you unique, being able to predict your own reactions/emotions. These are usually more introverted people. Philosophical and critical thinking is common with this intelligence.
Interpersonal: This area has to do with interaction with other people. People with this intelligence tend to be more extroverted, social, & empathetic. They can communicate easily with others & can make great leaders. They enjoy Discussions & Debates.
You may notice a few of these intelligences jump out at you and you exclaim, "That's so me!" and rightfully so. Each one of us has a few very strong intelligences, the others could use some more development. You may also notice, that within your career, hobbies, & lifestyle, these personal intelligences may intertwine with one another. For instance, I love flying, so I practice Aerial Dancing, and I am studying to be a pilot. Two hobbies that are very different from each other, yet share similar types of intelligence. In this case, mostly Bodily-Kinesthetic & Spacial Intelligence. Kinesthetic because both require physical movement & muscle memory. Spacial because both need to deal with space & layout (where the stage is set up versus where you're at in the sky). Both also require some musical & logical intelligence -dancing requires recognizing patterns, piloting means knowing how everything works. Dancing requires rhythm, beats, & recognizing the sound & how to move to it, Piloting requires listening & recognizing sounds around you.
Recognizing these intelligences can help you realize where your talents lie & how you can practice them! In fact, whatever your career path, you may be able to utilize all of your intelligences! Don't disregard one or the other, as they are all very important.
How does one measure intelligence? It depends on the subject and what your question is. If you want to learn a new dance step, would might ask somebody who is very Bodily-kinesthetic intelligent. If you're trying to solve a difficult math problem, someone with Logical-Mathematical intelligence might be someone to ask. But remember, everyone can possess different levels of intelligences. That dancer just might be a great mathematician at night, and that math professor might be the world's greatest ballet dancer.
"Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid"- Albert Einstein
What does that quote mean? To me, it means everyone possesses different abilities. It means that everyone is intelligent, just in different areas. It means that you shouldn't call someone "stupid" just because they don't know the same things that you do. They know things that you don't. Be open-minded and listen to the world around you, you might learn something!
There are many articles & books on these types of intelligences & are very interesting to learn about. What type of intelligences do you have? Which ones do you think you could work on? Leave an answer in the comments below!
My challenge to you is to find out your weakest intelligence, and exercise it! Are you lacking in the mathematical world? Practice some Math problems! Could your musical intelligence use some fine-tuning? Sing or practice an instrument! Do you think you have two left feet? Get up and dance!
The best way to learn is to just do it! It's fun, you learn new things and you might find you're actually very talented in that realm of intelligence after all, you just never realized it!
Another challenge is to become an expert at the intelligence you ARE good at. Have amazing interpersonal skills? Attend lots of networking events! Spacial Intelligence? Make something amazing! The world is yours to let your intelligence shine!
